Dear _______

I hope this finds you well. I don’t think we’ve met. My name is Claire. I’m writing on the behalf of the parents of our mutual friend, Aran Resool.

I’m very sorry to be the bearer of sad news but I'm afraid Aran passed away earlier this year, on January 2, 2022.

I’m aware you probably hadn’t seen much of Aran in recent years, but his parents Helen and Resa remembered you were at one time good friends and they thought you would want to be informed. Your email address was written down in a notebook which they found among Aran's belongings and passed on to me. They send their apologies that you were not invited to the memorial service, which took place during the last COVID-19 lockdown and was just for close family members.

The cause of death was hypothermia. I'm not privy to the full details but my understanding is it was a tragic accident. Unfortunately Aran had for some time struggled with depression and substance issues. Helen, Resa and Aran's brother Carl have asked me to be honest about this when sharing the news, and we're in the process of setting up a charitable fund in Aran's name, in order to help people with similar difficulties. If you don't mind I'll send you the relevant information once it's arranged, in case you wish to make a donation.

Helen and Resa have also asked that we try to remember Aran as he was for most of his life: an exceptionally bright, kind and loving young man, with a wonderful sense of humour. I'm so sorry again to have to tell you he is no longer with us. If you have any further questions or wish to share any reminiscences, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards, and condolences,

Claire Gledhill

P.S. do you by any chance know the name Des? It’s mentioned several times in Aran’s notebook but without a corresponding phone number or email address (or surname!). I would love to get in touch with him/her if I can. Thank you.
